oh zooey...

ATTENTION: They are playing at The Newport Folk Festival-August 1-August 3rd!!!

She & Him made their debut record as a love letter to the musicians who inspired it. Volume One introduces a boy and girl choir hell-bent on making music the old-fashioned way: by hand - and with as few machines as humanly possible. The She & Him story begins when in 2006 , renowned one man band M. Ward, recorded a duet with a girl named Zooey Deschanel. A delightful recording session, the experience lead to a dialogue between the two about collaborating further. This, in turn, led to Deschanel admitting to secretly making dozens and dozens of home demos and hoarding them like acorns for the winter. Sick and tired of being stingy and secretive about music, Deschanel realized that if songs were acorns then this was indeed her wintertime: she sent the recordings to Ward and these demos became the basis for their first record, entitled Volume One.Ward’s unique arrangements and virtuostic guitar playing paired with Deschanel’s affinity for vocal harmony give Volume One its characteristic sound . Ward and Deschanel share a mutual affection for the songs they grew up hearing on Los Angeles radio stations - and keep in their hearts the records that most DJ's aren't playing anymore: Les Paul and Mary Ford, The Ronettes, Nina Simone, Chet Atkins, Linda Ronstadt, the Carter Family and about a hundred others. Aiming to achieve the warmth and charm of pop and country records from the early and mid part of the twentieth century, Ward, who also produced the record, and Deschanel, who wrote most of the music, called upon the help of a number of extraordinary musicians including: Rachel Blumberg, Adam Selzer, Mike Coykendall, Tom Hagerman, Peter Broderick, Mike Mogis, and Paul Brainerd. Without whom this record would just be two people with no drums, bass, strings or pedal steel.California-raised and Portland-based, M. Ward has released 4 records with Merge, his latest was Post-War (2006). He has collaborated with the likes of Neko Case, Conor Oberst, Jim James, Nels Cline, and Jenny Lewis. California based Deschanel spent much of her early life singing in choirs, which is probably why she likes harmonies so much. She also enjoys reading, dancing and playing the piano. She & Him have performed together on occasion over the last year and enjoyed it very much.

TRILL

GETTIN ready...
last night we went to boston to see a show. i had never even heard of bus driver before, but hutch assured me that i would really enjoy him....he was right. bus driver is a one man act from L.A., the energy he put on stage was enviable. he sounds like a mix of dub and hip hop, but he had samples of radiohead and a few other indie favs wrapped up in there. he put all of the energy he had into the performance- julting and jerking back and forth while he splattered sweat all over the audience and asked us to chant, "bus driver, bus driver!!!" fer real though, the guy can put on a real good show, i advise all to check him out on myspace. his mini fro is very appealing as well. dizzee rascal followed with another engaging act. i never realized how many bostonians were into the dizzee, this, as hutch informed me, was his first U.S. tour as he resides in the fabulous United Kingdom. he was wearing a particularly glitzy t-shirt, with the word "TRILL" on it under the cuban flag which was all colored rhinestones.....it was just what i had always dreamed it would be.
here are some pics from the excursion, i was a bit drunk and completely exhausted so i apologize completely for the quality and lack of performance pics, i was rather disappointed by the turnout, pretty much all white kids in their early twenties. but then again, it is boston afterall.

feel the music

Chan Marshall....

aaaaaaaaaaaaah. graduate school is disgusting, i really wouldnt wish it on anyone. i was supposed to attend a fabulous brunch today, but instead am cooped up in my apartment on my computer working on a final exam for my psychopathology class,,, drinking jasmine green tea and listening to cat power on vinyl. her album, free is so damn good. i think it is def the most under-recognized albums; especially since the lovely eddie veder does back up vocals on one of the songs which makes me tear up everytime. i am excited for tonight though, it will be a good distraction from my papers. hutch and i are going to boston to see dizzee rascal, el-p and bus driver. i LOVE dizzee rascal.
i was thinking the other day about a couple of my inspirations for style that have pretty much been constants in my mind for awhile now. you know how when you see someone you get a sort of warmth inside? i feel like that when i think of this woman. there will be more to come, but for now, Erykah Badu. you are YOU.
(i realize that my blog is a bit lacking in the inspiration for the boys, it will come.....right now i just need to be selfish and fulfill my own needs)

Lately

1. friday: recovered from a massive hangover, discovered the most fabulous jumper at the thrift store, white with rust colored stripes. it doesnt zip all the way up the back, but i will be damned if i don't wear it every single day.
2. saturday: bought some bamboo blinds that ended up being too short for my window. i really need to make a trip to ikea soon.
most importantly, watched a movie that has now made it into a close second in my list of top favorite movies, "EAGLE VS. SHARK," which is a New Zealand made romantic comedy about a girl named Lily, a shy, wistful girl, a songwriter when no one is listening, and an unpopular cashier at a fast food restaurant who has a crush from afar on Jarrod, a self-assured eccentric geek who works in a video game store. They meet at a "dress as your favorite animal party" (which i will be sure to have at some point in the near future. the music in it is thoughtful and the guy in it is from the show flight of the conchords. i really and truly implore you to all see it immediately, if you trust me at all.
