its been so so long since ive written a sweet blog entry, months actually. summer has been busy busy, i attended my first drag show in provincetown of all places. i fell in love with a drag queen. i spent countless nights in NH in front of a campfire, family and friends, got my heart broken, went skinny dipping and lost a step papa. my oh my, its been real......and so it goes, onto another month new england. lets make this winter less snowy please.

Sometime during my teenage years my mama showed me a movie called 'Splendor in The Grass.' she told me about Natalie Wood and her romances with both Warren Beatty and Mister Frank Sinatra. She told me that Natalie Wood drowned off a yaucht owned by Robert Wagner's family. The official theory is that Wood either tried to leave the yacht or to secure a dinghy from banging against the hull when she accidentally slipped and fell overboard. When her body was found, she was wearing a down jacket, nightgown, and socks. A true tragedy.
'Splendor in the Grass' is a passionate love story about a young couple trying to fight for the love they both feel for eachother. Wood's character comes from a lower class family as Beatty's from an upper class world. There was always a Romeo and Juliet kind of pull between the two statuses. I believe this was Beatty's first film debut and Wood looks ravishing, she had true natural beauty that it all her own. Beatty's character's sister is a flashy flapper with a drinking problem and a style thats way ahead of her time.
Im currently reading, and loving Just Kids by Patti Smith. She writes about how Maplethrope's favorite movie was always 'Splendor in the Grass'. When i read that i felt a special kinship with dear Robert as 'Splendor' has always been one of my favorite films as well.

while exploring echo park, CA a few months back i stopped into a small vintage shop which consisted of some really amazing vintage and reconstructed vintage items; levis already cut off jean shorts of all sizes and washes and boots from eras of all kinds. while making my way to the back of the store i spotted a neatly organized rack of completely authentic kimonos of all lengths, prints and styles. i quickly filled my arms with a bunch and made my way to the fitting room. much to my dismay,none of them really fit quite right and some, upon careful examination were slightly stained. since that unsuccessful discovery ive been on a search for a short kimono with just the right print. i love the shape of them and the hanging arms that drape like wings.
i guess ill just have to keep scouring.

i wanted to do a blog about alexa chung, but then i came across some photos for the line she did for madewell and i was temporarily distracted. i love the line, it just reminds me so much of my own thought process in regards to fashion. i like juxtaposition; a sleek and tight leather mini skirt with an oversized tuxedo shirt,oversized blazers with skimpy shorts. i like the prints in the collection and the color combinations, mustard yellow is my favorite. i think she understands the art of matching vintage looking items with more high end fashion items and in the end it all ends up looking elegant.

so,
ive been wanting to do a post about indigenous people for awhile now. im still reeling about how truly disconnected our society has become from that way of life. i blame technology. i came across this picture while researching japan sometime ago. the Ainu are an indigenous ethnic group of Japan. some of them are still living today, but it is unsure how many are really left. Ainu culture dates from around 1200 CE. The Ainu were a society of hunter-gatherers, who lived mainly off fish and plants, and the people followed a religion based around phenomena of nature. all of these values and ways of life are almost distinct to us as a people now in a way....people take nature for granted more than anything, in my opinion.
the Ainu people wore such beautiful textiles as part of their garments. Traditional Ainu culture was quite different from Japanese culture. Never shaving after a certain age, the men had full beards and moustaches. Men and women alike cut their hair level with the shoulders at the sides of the head, trimmed semicircularly behind. The women tattooed their mouths, and sometimes the forearms. The mouth tattoos were started at a young age with a small spot on the upper lip, gradually increasing with size. The soot deposited on a pot hung over a fire of birch bark was used for color. Their traditional dress was a robe spun from the inner bark of the elm tree, called attusi or attush. Various styles of clothing were made, and consisted generally of a simple short robe with straight sleeves, which was folded around the body, and tied with a band about the waist. The sleeves ended at the wrist or forearm and the length generally was to the calves. Women also wore an undergarment of Japanese cloth.
i just love the prints and their ceremonious dress and dramatic makeup and layering..the head pieces, all of it...i thought everyone should take a look.....

well, well, its been waay too overdue that i do a blog on mister tom waits. ive always admired his personal sense of style....it is always so crisp, but yet disheveled all at once. i think this harmonious combination just makes his style stand out. ive often wondered what it would be like to be in a room with tom waits, as ive always been a person who admires pure individuality. tom waits is individuality.....from his voice, to his stories, to his hats, to his way with impromptu, to his aesthetic, to his blunt intellect. all are things i truly admire about the man.....also i think,,,,just maybe he may like to follow me around for a day, he may find some very interesting subject matter for a song ;)

alfred hitchcock has to be one of the most stylish men of all time (in my humble opinion). i was talking with a woman that i work with and she was telling me about her new years eve night...she said she spent the whole night watching hitchcock films and i remember thinking, "yeah, i went to a party, and definitely drank way too much champagne, stood on a rooftop with sparklers, played dice and got a new years kiss from a beauty.... but my new years night was definitely lacking mister alfred hitchcock". he is a true pioneer of so many film techniques that are still being used today and he is an inspiration to many directors. he was born in london and if you look him up on trusty wikipedia it tells a story of his father sending him down to the police station on a regular basis to be punished for his bad behavior. alfred h. you are a true inspiration for your individuality, creativity and impeccable style...

John Hughes, sweet sweet John Hughes. i know that this is late, but i wanted to do a blog in honor of him since his untimely death in august :( i watched 'pretty in pink' AGAIN for the billionth time the other night and still was blown blown blown away by the fashion in the movie. i appreciate molly ringwald's character 'Andy' for her creative and resourceful skills with fashion. she is definitely an icon. the boots she wears in the 'breakfast club' are all over the place now. 'pretty in pink' is by far one of the most inspirational movies fashion wise for me.
and p.s. i really want a pair of flat flat creepers (i know, its shameful) but Duckie's look sooooooo cute with scrunched up socks and peg rolled jeans

ive come to realize that i think i just have trouble with the initial season change in all shapes and forms. i have trouble with the transition from summer to fall to winter not only because im FREEZING, but also because it takes me some time to transition fashion wise. i mean how easy it is in the summer to just throw on a tshirt dress and be off, now we need to put a little more planning into what we wear so we dont freeeze our little asses off. it helps me to settle into this by finding pictures of outfits that are condusive to the cold but that are also real real hott on the body......here are some latest discoveries that have basically helped to dig me out of my seasonal rut

this one has been a long time crush actually. i loooove love love adrien brody, LOVE HIM. i rented a movie the other night called "Brothers Bloom" with mark ruffalo, rachel weisz and, of course, my boyfriend adrien :) the movie was written and directed by Rian Johnson and its brilliant. i am always a person who is drawn to cinematography when i watch a movie. i remember when i first watched Amelie and was captivated by the rich colors throughout the movie, the director stated that it was his intention to carefully place colors with eachother to accentuate different emotions; red for love, etc. this movie is very similar in that the colors throughout the movie particularly in the clothing of the characters is so carefully executed that it really adds to the movie's appeal. of course the fashion is impeccable as is adrien brody's face ;) haha. check out the premise of the movie HERE

no, really. i just saw this movie the other night while eating oreos and milk and thinking about how much money i spent over the weekend (monika and i went shopping). anyway, you should really see 'Lying,' the opening scene is this fabulous art deco living room with chloe sevigny roaming around wearing super short shorts with a geometric black and white pattern and a white button up with both sides of her hair thrown up in bobby pins. trust me, its a really pleasing visual.

i love fall, i really do...just the smells that come around during that time fill me with some sort of nostalgia, but the fact that winter is just around the corner ruins my true ability to embrace fall with open arms. i have been known to hibernate during winter, ive realized that i am just not a person who was made for New England seasonal changes. I dont like to be frozen to the core, straight to the bone, i dont like winter sports, and i hate snow...i hate driving in it, walking in it, shoveling it, i HATE IT. so, in order for me to keep away from it as much as i can i stay inside, cozy in my bed watching movies or renting various television series.
i just received a movie the other day from Netflix which i really loved, its called Falling Angels. sounds a bit religious, i know but its not. The acting is good, the story is good...its just a family surviving the struggle of life and death. and for a mental health clinician, that is right up my alley-------you should really see it.

it was a crazy day today, but i ended up with a smile. i started out my morning by traveling into Hartford to the Hartford Correctional Center to assess a client. then i went to court. then i went to starbucks (i needed a green tea boost). finished up paperwork and decided to go to the gym (since i got a membership recently and i have not used it once). on my way i stopped by the local convenience to grab a bottle of water. when i went to purchase it i realized i didnt have any cash and i would have to use my card. as i handed over my card the older man behind the counter said "well, im not supposed to do this because theres a 10 dollar minimum, but because of your beauty i will this time." i thanked him kindly and went on my way... its really funny how sometimes a perfect stranger can put a smile on your face.

MARBELIZED AND BLEACHED DENIM IS ALL THE RAGE!
so, ive made a couple pairs of bleached jeans lately. the first ones i attempted were much darker than the ones shown and i loved how they came out, they were a darker washed pair of James jeans that i didnt wear very much, and now that they have a lil twist of tye dye, i wear them all the time. The ones shown are an old pair of Ernest Sewn jeans, which i love because they are always super long and lean, just like me :)
so, let me tell you how its done ( you can save a lot of money just buying a bottle of bleach and pouring it over an old pair of jeans). what i did with the ones shown, which was far less toxic was that i laid the jeans on my lawn and poured bleach meticulously all over them (I used fresh scent bleach) then i filled a bucket full of water and poured the rest of the bottle in the water. I like the color they came out overall, and the bleach saturated spots which came out real white, which i totally love!, just watch them to make sure you achieve the wash you want. if you look close, there is even a leaf shape bleach spot which makes them so much more authentic :)
WARNING: you may smell like a public pool for awhile after, but once you wash them a few times it will fade.....good luck.

everyone has a blog now, EVRYONE, its hard to keep up , i know.
well, last night, i couldnt get to sleep, my partner was snoring beside me, so i decided to put in a movie that i just got from netflix. directed by Mr. Martin Scorsese, this movie is so gritty, the camera work is so organic, you can see the camera wavering in every scene. now, obviously this movie is a true fashion inspiration, or i wouldnt "blog" about it. Starring the incomparable Ellen Burstyn, giving an Oscar-winning performance (one of the finest of the 1970s), this comedy-drama is tough, but never off-putting. After her husband dies, 35-year-old Alice Hyatt from New Mexico and her smart-mouthed 11-year-old son Tommy take to the road, chasing her girlhood dream of finding songbird success in Monterey, CA. They get stuck in Phoenix, where she meets up with a frightening Harvey Keitel. Later, waitressing at Mel & Ruby's Cafe in Tucson, she meets a gentle farmer who's had his share of heartbreak. Ellen Burnstyn's hair and outfits are so well put even though many of them involve the 70s favorite fabric, polyester. Lelia Goldoni plays Ellen's best friend in the movie and she is the cutest girl ever, i am planning on adding "Shadows" to my netflix queue, which is a John Cassavetes film from 1959 and stars Lelia Goldoni, has anyone seen this film????

a lil Egon first....

so, its been awhile and i havent been good with this thing, but i was laying around after taking an exam tonight and decided that i had some free time...does anyone read this things anymore?? seems like we all have blogs now,,, and we are all wondering the same thing about them...who reads this anyway. but, actually for me, mostly, this is an escape, a preoccupation from the loads of work and emotional banter that involves a majority of my time for the past three years.
well, awhile back, the bf and i went to see antony and the johnsons at berkeley school of music in boston. this was about a month ago, but its been so long since ive been thinking straight and since ive downloaded the photos off my camera. ugh. seeing antony was wonderful, as always (ive seen him one other time in montreal)..i knew that this was a sit down show, and i knew that we werent too close, but not too far away either, i also knew that antony and the johnsons has had a serious reputation for causing my emotions to ooze with the most serious of oozes, needless to say, it did not fail to do so. i was a complete mess, complete. luckily i had tissues. i do have to say, through all of my tears, there were many times of complete laughter, antony is such a fabulous performer, just so talented. last time i saw him he proceeded to cover a whitney houston song, this time he did not disappoint by singing beyonce's "crazy in love" he did this so immaculately that beyonce herself would have stepped aside and let him perform her song SOLO.

first, i still cant believe this is his real name....
my mama and i met in boston for the weekend to have "girltime" and amidst all of the wonderful food we ate, including a decadent swored fish- we took the train over to the ICA museum in Boston to check out the Shepard Fairy exhibit. The museum was nice inside, but as my mom put it, "it didnt have the best flow." the set up isnt as nice as other museums i have gone to, it isnt any fun to walk through a part of an exhibit and end up at a dead end only to have to turn around. regardless of this, people were flockin' like it was their job to check out Shepard Fairy's stuff. Now, i have never been a huge fan, ive always really liked his andre the giant stencils, and i like the fact that he got his start in new england with graffiti art. I was also pleasantly surprised at the amount of antiwar and pure political symbolism that he uses. i didnt really know what to expect,,,but one of the pieces surely blew me away. It was a large piece, covering an entire wall of the museum that displayed a Muslim woman's face with her mouth covered, an anti war logo, beautiful tapestry prints in the background and bombs witb flowers exploding out of them (i couldnt find a photo of it). now, if anyone knows me, the staunch anti war activist that i am....this one was right up my skinny alley. heres a video to look at, i dont feel like typing anymore :(

the other day i had my first individual counseling session with a client where i almost shed a small tear. one of my greatest fears upon embarking into the world of counseling was that i would become emotional when hearing a client's story. So far things have been peaceful considering the depth of information that i hear on a daily basis, sometimes i get worried i'll have nightmares really. ive managed to compose myself quite nicely until friday when i saw one of my favorite clients. i met her in the group that i lead, which is a women's group and then she was going through some tough times and requested individual counseling sessions. this woman is one of the most compassionate individuals i have ever worked with-it amazes me everytime i am in a room with her how she has maintained such compassion and postitivity through all of the shit that she's been through. i am reminded through this line of work that humans are so completely resiliant. i find it more difficult to sit and wallow in my own sadness when i hear stories from people's lives that would break even the strongest soul. anyway, i was in the middle of my session on friday and my client looks at me and says,
"erin, i had the strangest dream last night....i dreamt that i walked into your office and you were wearing this long green dress down to your ankles with a white t-shirt underneath, and you were wearing sandals with your toes painted bright red...when i walked into your office, you were crying and i asked you what was wrong, you told me that you were leaving and i immediately started crying too."
now, even though i thought the outfit that she described me wearing in her state of subconscious was really cute sounding, i still found it hard to contain myself from breaking down. as my internship comes to a close, slowly but surely and i will soon have a masters degree to frame and hang on my wall in may, i am reminded that i am leaving all of these people who i have gotten to trust me with their deepest darkest secrets over the course of a year. as may approaches i am going to have to face the inevitible termination phase of counseling with all of my wonderful clients. we talk about termination in my classes a lot. it can be very difficult for clients becuase it can be natural for them to sometimes have feelings of abandonment along with the process of termination. i do not want anyone to feel that way, because it's a very scary feeling.i am hoping....hoping, hoping that there will be a position available in may for me to be able to continue working with these clients who i have gotten to know and truly admire.....we'll see, and wish me luck if you took the time to read this. peace.

since i am super bored at work and i have not taken the time (and i have been meaning to) to blog about the movie "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains." This movie was originally made in 1981, but was re released recently again. The premise of the movie is basic, but the fashion is amazing! The movie stars miss Diane Lane (who is cuter than cute) and Laura Dern who play teenage girls who start a punk band. The film was originally titled, "All Washed Up," and was never given wide release. It has a loyal cult following and I only wish i had found out about it sooner, as i would have definitely joined the cult. The Stains were also frequently referenced by the riot girl movement of the 90s.
mmmm, i wonder if they were the influence behind jena malone's band name????

last night i took my papa to see Paradise Redux at Real Art Ways. i was pleasantly surprised and amazed at how truly talented this John Kelly was at playing as miss Joni Mitchell. i went, not really knowing what to expect, but from beginning to end i was completely enamored with his performance and ability to capture her true identity. we were sitting in the second row, with the rest of the die hard fans in the front. i think, to be perfectly honest, you need to be a true true Joni fan to really appreciate a show like this. it was absolutely amazing how well he played her songs and the instruments and still managed to capture her essence and mannerisms to a tee. my papa was impressed that he even got the Canadian accent right. I was in love with this man as Joni, and would have been flattered if i were Joni herself, but i was even more in love with him when he took off his wig and dress and sang Joni as himself.
my one and only complaint was that he was wearing leopard print shoes which i felt were something that Joni would never wear.....but still it was worth every penny!

FIRST....saturday i will be bringing my papa kenney to Paved Paradise at Real Art Ways. My papa is by far the biggest Joni fan i know. When i was a kid he owned all her albums, listened to them incessantly, played her songs on his guitar, talked about how beautiful she is, and now he is even considering buying a piece of her art.

Also, another thing on my mind lately is the idea of wearing brown and black leather accessories together. I am a person who always avoided doing this. It is a slight OCD thing for me, if i wear black boots, i do not also wear a brown bag or belt. I think this fashion fopaw is beginning to grow on me slightly the more that I see people doing it. What do others think about this???

for quite sometime now, i have been trying to grow my hair out...with the hopes, to create drastic roots. so far, so good. i have been amazed that no one has questioned my "laziness" (or so it may appear to those women who think that roots are just atrocious). i was amazed to come across a couple other ladies dawning the same locks. i was pleased to know that i wasnt the only one with the hopes of ultimately looking like a california surfer girl from the 70s who's beach blonde has now grown out with the chill of new england.

i was in a record store the other day trying to pawn some records when i came across an old parliament record. i immediately got all giddy looking at the cover of the record and noticing the vast array of pure fashion freakouts! i hope this blog entry reaches you well....i mean, parliament is a band i have not really listened to, ive heard a few songs here and there. but the fashion that these kids were throwin at me on this dusty record cover was pure perfection. when i googled them i came up with better images from funkadelic which was george clinton's sister band to parliament. still. no failure in the fashion department. sorry i dont have more pictures, but please look over the ones i could find with care...danke

sean penn has been in my top five favorite actors list for quite some time now....his performance as harvey milk in the movie "milk" only solidified this for me. the movie was above and beyond my favorite of 2008. it illicit ed a variety of emotions for me from laughing to crying to pure inspiration (aaaaah the sweet fashion of the 1970s). i also was able to gawk admirably at james franco, who, in this movie was beyond beautiful. sean penn must have been honored to make out with him.....in any regard, please go see the movie,,my selfish review does not give it justice!
